Staff Pick:

Every so often here at Repo we like to pick one record that we can all agree on as being the one thing we can't stop listening to. The one we pick today is...

The People's Temple - More for the Masses
(Hozac Records)
"Like a psilocybin trip in the woods. Awesome sounds traveling in and out of your lobes at 150 miles per hour. The wilderness around you is growing…breathing. This record is the soundtrack to your adventure. You can hear it somewhere off in the distance, drawing you in. It makes you want to move your feet, do awkward but funky things with your body. Michigan’s own People’s Temple has nailed down what seems to be the best trip you have ever had, and all you have to do is drop the needle.  They have turned back the dial, sharply carving out a block from the small tree of modern psych bands paying proper respects to their 1960s predecessors." (Ryan Yelencsics, Fuzz Drench)

These words above are all painfully true - this double-brotherly band from Lansing, MI has done it again (we had their debut LP Sons of Stone up here as a staff pick in 2011!) Get a proper preview of the album right below with these few songs, then come on out because we have copies of the album on hand!

Everybody Loves Free Stuff!

It's true, we all love to get something for nothing.  Well it just so happens that we have free stuff ALL OF THE TIME and right now is no different.  If you buy a copy of Pissed Jeans - Honeys or  Bleeding Rainbow - Yeah Right you get a FREE 7"! And if you buy the Foals new record Holy Fire you get a sweet Foals notebook.

"Free? FREE!"

Yes my friend, free.

V/A - "The Velvet Underground & Nico" by Castle Face & Friends
(Castle Face Records)

Released just before the new year in a modest edition of 1000, Castle Face Records delivered us this one of a kind compilation covering the entire classic album The Velvet Underground and Nico by the Velvet Underground. That edition was on banana yellow vinyl and quickly sold out, but never fear, Repo Records has got you covered. We still have copies of the album, which includes covers of these timeless tracks by Thee Oh Sees, White Fence, Ty Segall, Blasted Canyons, Burnt Ones, Warm Soda, Kelly Stoltz, the Fresh and Onlys, amongst others! These artists have re-imagined each track in their own special way, some of which we've left for you to preview below.

Andrew Bird - Hands of Glory
(Mom & Pop Music)

It's almost lazy to make Andrew Bird our Staff Pick because he's already so beloved.  He has yet to do much, if anything, that people ended up hating.  He seems to be in that rare group of artist that can pretty much do what ever the hell they want and we'll like them for it (e.g. Ted Leo) OH, you don't believe me? Well watch this clip and look into my eyes and then tell me you don't like him more for it.  He's singing into the cold dead eyes of a puppet like they belonged to his own child!

Last years Break It Yourself was a bit underwhelming and the only people that gushed over it were already fans.  With Hands of Glory he's at the top of his game and it's going to get him into brand new hands.
The album starts off with a just a thumping bass and ends with beautiful string arrangements slowly disintegrating into nothing with everything in between feeling equally remarkable.  "Railroad Bill" is Andrew Bird channeling Jerry Jeff Walker to great effects and "Three White Horses" feels haunting and catchy.
But to single out songs really does does the album a disservice.  This is an album best enjoyed all at once.  HOG is also pretty short with only 8 tracks.  It becomes an album that you can say to yourself after it's finished "Yeah, I'll listen to that again"

OBN IIIs - s/t LP
(Tic Tac Totally Records)

OBN IIIs have more or less been quiet for a majority of 2012, but this new self-titled album makes up for all that time, again and again. As far as their sound goes, they haven’t missed a beat, retaining their endlessly exhilarating rock and roll spirit with the fury of some of the rowdiest punk rock. The difference this time around would probably be that things are not as straightforward overall as they were on their debut LP The One and Only. In the long run these new tracks are longer, making for an overall lengthier record and giving the band more time to experiment and progress their filthy, snarling, punk n' roll sound with some new ideas (styrofoamdrone.com). We have some copies of the vinyl in the store now, come on down and grab one - get a preview of the record first by listening right here!

Cold Showers - Love & Regret
(Dais Records)

Love and Regret is an ambitious offering, combining elements of swirling post-punk with a bit of murky pop haze and a sinister industrial-electronic twist. It’s a rich and intoxicating sound, characterized heavily by Jonathan Weinberg’s brooding vocals, Chris King’s icy cool guitars, relentless drum thuds and dark, reverberating synth textures. The LP wields a few different styles, including dark dance floor burners (“So I Can Grow,” “BC,” “Seminary”) that seek to invigorate, while others like “I Don’t Mind,” “In Terms of Pleasure” and “New Dawn” have a lighter pop edge. (styrofoamdrone.com). Even though Love and Regret seemed to get a bit overshadowed by records from Ty Segall and Tame Impala coming out the same week, all of us at Repo still share a mutual love for it. Listen to the album below and come get one before they're gone!
