New Staff pick and Black Friday Update

With so much new and great music coming out it's hard to pick a record that stands out above the rest.  But we always like to single out an an album that always seems to on our speakers.  Recently everyone at Repo has been in love with the tunes from one of Philadelphia's own.

Far-Out Fangtooth - Borrowed Time
(Siltbreeze Records)

We can't stop loving the Philly scene because time and time again Philadelphia puts out top tier music and Far Out Fangtooth keeps that track record going.  This record is a great post-punk powerhouse.  At times reminding you of the more brooding Bauhaus tracks and harnessing the power of Wooden Shjips to get lost in the track.  No song better exemplifies this than the stunning "Beyond Your Bones".  Joseph Kusy's voice soars in the most haunting way as the band swells behind him with a washed out wall of sound that envelops your ears.  Philly has a great history when is comes to music and Borrowed Bones adds nicely to that legacy.

Black Friday 2013 is over but not forgotten!
We all just want to say thank you to everyone that came to Repo for the Black Friday releases.  Like always you were super cool and very easy going.  We say it a lot but it bears repeating, YOU GUYS RULE!  In case you missed any of the releases because you were busy fighting soccer moms at Target, have no fear, we've still got plenty of copies of cool records.

Holy crap! is that the last copy of Lee Scratch Perry and The Upsetter's "Super Ape", I think it is...

Staff Pick and Free Dr. Dog things!

What do we love listening to this week? what is spinning non-stop in the store? It's Ty Segall and friends master work level psych record.  That's right, it's....

Fuzz - S/T
(In the red)

Some day Ty Segall will run out of things to scream about and guitars to shred with but luckily that day seems far away.  And being one of the biggest names in the west coast garage/psych scene and putting about 5 records out a year seems to be doing nothing to slow him down at present.  For Fuzz He's taking a back seat on the guitar front and sitting behind the drums for some Stooge-esque primal drumming.  The guitar work belongs to Charles Moothart and he's busting out the heavy psych sounds!  Diving deep into 60's garage psych barrel to pull out sounds that remind you of both Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd and MC5 level rock.  Check it out!

Also! For the new Dr. Dog Record B Room we've got a limited give away: Signed lyric sheets!  It's awesome and the record is great.  Come get it while we still have some.

What we are digging:

This. When this album dropped in early 2011 it came out of nowhere.Well, almost nowhere. Maybe you had been following the craziness surrounding Frank's southern California hip hop collective Odd Future, who had been riding a wave of indie awareness and controversy at this time, or maybe you were a fan of forward thinking RnB and it was just something on your radar. However it came into your view, it more than likely planted itself firmly in place and didn't leave your brain until it could leak down to your fingers and type itself on a best of 2011 list. There was only one thing missing...vinyl. You see, nostalgia was put out as a mixtape, famously released by Frank after frustrations with label Def Jam dragging their heels forced him to release the album himself on the Odd Future website to the surprise of OF fans checking their website looking to re-download their lost copy of "Goblin" or "Earl".

But all that is different now. Why? Cuz Repo. Now you can hear "There Will Be Tears" in all it's life affirming glory, "Novacaine" in all it's indie kid pleasing-ness, and "Strawberry Swing" in all it's beautiful non-Coldplay-ness. We kid. But we really love this album. And it really shines on vinyl. Come say hi and pick up a copy. Repo loves you

Staff Pick:

Every so often here at Repo we like to pick one record that we can all agree on as being the one thing we can't stop listening to. The one we pick today is...

Lantern - Rock 'N' Roll Rorschach
(Sophomore Lounge)

The title of Philadelphia-based Lantern's new album isn't just a fun, alliterative phrase-- it's a satisfyingly self-aware critique as well. Rock 'N' Roll Rorschach is just that: a sort of abstract skeleton of "rock 'n' roll," onto which we can all project what we most like to see in rock music. In using many of rock's most recognizable musical signifiers (like "Evil Eye"s "Lust For Life" beat) and lyrical mainstays (the mojo hand, "She's A Rebel"), Lantern is able to make music that is so obviously and straightforwardly rock 'n' roll that it sounds both instantly familiar and impossible to pin down. It's rare to see a band so single-mindedly focused on genre. And the result would almost be pastiche if Rock 'N' Roll Rorschach didn't actually rock so damn hard. We have copies available in the store right now! Come on out and grab one while you can - they are limited to 500 pressings!

Lust for Youth - Perfect View
(Sacred Bones)

"On Perfect View, Swedish producer Hannes Norrvide returns with his third full length and it’s warmer and more inviting than any of his previous work. The album is composed of largely instrumental pieces, focusing more on beats, samples and general ambiance than its predecessor, last year’s Growing Seeds. Tracks like “Breaking Silence” and “Barcelona” highlight this shift in direction and overall mood, while tracks such as “Another Day” and “Vibrant Brother” stay true to Norrvide’s signature form. Overall this album ventures more towards rave than no-wave and this is perhaps most evidenced by witnessing their live show where Norrvide is joined by Vår frontman Loke Rahbek (Sacredbones.com)." Fresh off the presses we have copies of this brand new LUST FOR YOUTH album Perfect View in the store right now!  Come and get one!
