Every so often here at Repo we like to pick one record that we can all agree on as being the one thing we can't stop listening to. The one we pick today is....

Cloud Nothings - Attack On Memory
(Car Park Records)

What singer Dylan Baldi had to say on his hopes for this record "I just hope that they realize that they’re not able to pigeonhole us necessarily to a certain genre. We’re a band that has our own aesthetic rather than a band that ascribes to maybe trends or something that people might have thought we did based on our last couple of records."
Well, he got it. This doesn't sound like 2011's self titled release with it's spazzy pop punk-ness. With Attack on Memories opener "No Future/No past" Cloud Nothings make the statement that this might be a different record. With it's decidedly darker tone and post-rock structure the sound of those lo-fi recordings from Turned On are blown outta the water.
The second track is the much talked about "Wasted Days". The song clocks in at just under the nine minute mark and really leaves a statement. It starts off with a heavy enough tune, going on without a clue of what's to come. Then the song shifts gears and... it just becomes a monster. Building for five minutes until the song explodes back into the chorus. I love it.
The record has a sound that is constantly reminding you of something. You wanna say Drive Like Jehu or you wanna say Fugazi but nothing really hits it right on the mark. This album works best when they let themselves get a little heavy and explore the range they can create in a song. You just get sucked into some of them. Oddly enough, the the few poppier songs on the album seem out of place, like they were written at a different time.
Attack On Memories lets us know that CN is still evolving, still finding new creative outlets and that we should be on the look out for what's in store.

News: Local Post-Punk pysch favorites Far-Out Fangtooth is playing at the Level Room (21st and Market) on Sunday the 15th at 9pm. NOTE: This is one of the shows that Phonographic Arts has switched over from Little Bar. Little Bar no longer does Phonographic Arts shows.

We also have this cool Matador/True Panther 2011-12 sampler 12" "Intended Play". Featuring the likes of Girls, Kurt Vile, Fucked Up, Perfume Genius and more. It also has this amazing new Ceremony track Hysteria. Oh, and it's only $1.99!

Guided By Voices - Let's Go Eat The Factory

Seeing older acts come out with new material can be scary. When The Feelies said they were gonna put out Here Before in 2011 I couldn't help but think "Why?" With their back catalog so loved why risk it, why smear a great history? Well, they're artist. They're not out to be commercially successful. They simply want to make music cause that is what they do, and they do it well. And when Here Before came out I loved it.

So when I heard that Guided By Voices was coming out with a new record I forgot all about the lesson Here Before had taught and felt that sense of dread. I didn't want one of my favorite bands to get back together (after a tour that one could argue was cashing in on itself) and put out a lame record. Should this record just be considered another release of 2012? It's different then when a band simply comes out with a new record after putting one out the year before. Papers and thesis's have been written about GBV. I've seen a girl weep during "Red Men and Their Wives". I've bonded with people about lines from "Echos Myron". So, yes, GBV is treated differently.

And here it is, Lets Eat The Factory and it's...... good, really good. After hearing this record I thought to myself "that IS how an older GBV would sound". it's filled with more of the mellower composition they're known for. There is no "Game of Pricks" on this record. filling it instead with songs that are lovingly produced and thought over. On tracks like "Doughnut for a Snowman" you can almost hear the shit-eating grin on their collective faces. The lyrics are still amazing. Still full of wit and sarcasm, Pollard and Sprout can still make you rewind your record to double check what they said. From "The Unsinkable Fats Domino" How's your life and cycles/ compared to your next rival?/ a '59 revial?/a '005 Survival? it's just fun stuff. Pick this record up, play it with some friends around and hang out, it'll be a good time.

Sorry we haven't updated in a while. Apathy? Disillusionment? Contempt? All possible reasons but the truth is we've been pretty busy wrapping this year up and there are very few releases in December. So we thought we would just post some things of interest here for everyone.

New Releases

Um, like I said not much has come out in recent days. There was the Girls "Lawrence" heart shaped 10" that is super limited (we still have some copies) and pretty neat.

There's been some amazing garage rock records to come out. The Eddy Current Suppression Ring collection "So Many Thing" is a record I don't think I'll ever take off our turntable. Ty Segall's Singles collection and Thee Oh See's "Carrion Crawler/The Dream" are both fantastic.

Cool People, Places and Things

One really cool thing about a record store is everyone that's there is at LEAST curious about music. So some of the people that stumble in here do some pretty cool thing like making music or hosting radio shows or what ever. I've mentioned some of them in the past but here's some more. Just goes to show you that you should talk to other people while your here!

Jazz With Dan Buskirk
WPRB-Princeton 103.3 fm mondays 11am-1pm

A couple of weeks ago I was talking to Dan and mentioned that I have a really hard time getting into jazz and I wish I could find the right style to catch my attention. Well Dan went home and the next week he came in with an amazing mix CD that showed me all the other faces of jazz that I never knew about. I have yet to take the CD out of my stereo at home I listen to it that much. Dan is a great guy with a radio show that is equally great. If you want to hear interesting, capturing jazz tracks then you need to hear Dan's show.

? and the Mysterians - Action & 96 Tears
(Real Gone Music)

It's hard to say just how cool these dudes were. The eccentric lead singer "?" (he would eventually have his name legally changed to that), the groovy-er than thou attitude and the fact that these guys topped charts with a proto-garage sound that was a little stranger then what most were doing at the time. Oh, and all of this in 1966. With out this band I can only imagine what the Lyres or the Stranglers or even the Strange Boys would sound like.
So needless to say their records were pretty cool too. Somehow though (Legal problems?) they never managed to ever get officially reissued. Which was a bummer cause it made the records pricier and hard to find. Well here's the chance to pick up these records at a decent price and they sound great. I swear that if you by this record you will be 20% cooler.

Psychic Teens - TEEN
(Golden Voyage)

Thank you Philadelphia! So many great bands are here in Philly and every time I come across a new one it makes me feel like I just ate an amazing slice of pizza.

The sound is a perfect pairing of the pounding psych stoner rock we love in Wooden Shjips and that Gothic-y rock sound of Bauhaus. Driving rhythm and waves of guitar make a perfect back drop to the vocals on this record. People will point out pretty fast that there is a sorta Ian Curtis sound there, but it's in a good way. Especially in songs where he extends his voice a little further like "Rose" or "Red". The rhythms these guys can come up with are fantastic in how unrelenting they can be. I've listened to these tracks a couple times today and I keep falling in love with these bass lines. An awesome band that I pumped to see what's going to come after this.

The Unwed Teenage Mothers - Blonde Girls
(Play Pinball)

Featuring both members of Bass Drum of Death and various others bands on various songs. Some songs on this record are standard garage pop rockers and that's whatever but this record really shins when they allow themselves to do things slightly different. Adding a synth line or slowing down and adding an acoustic really have an impact, making for more capturing and engaging songs. Which is important on a sound that has been done so many times. Also this record is an EP. It's the same songs pressed on both sides because, according to the label, you'll need another side cause you are gonna "...burn out the first side with how much you'll play this"

...... Well I can't decide. Today two albums came in and both are pretty killer. So we'll just call this one a tie between....

J.C. Satan - Hell Death Samba

French weird-o punkers J.C. Satan hits us again with their second album "Hell Death Samba" and after 2010's "Sick of Love" LP we couldn't wait for more. SOL was filled with moody stoned punk tunes and a splash of heavier rock songs for flavor. This time around it seems like they flipped the coin and made an album that was heavier more "live show" ready and catchier. They still have their classic Salvador Dali-esque lyrics ("This wasn't my room/That wasn't my house/I saw my cat flying through the sky.... This is my arm/that is my sword/against the darkness/like a superhero...) And not to forget the sound that we first loved them for there's still tracks that sound like they're coming from some pot head's strange dream. It's good stuff all around.

This song is not off "Hell Death Samba" but it's the same flavor as the album. Couldn't find anything off the new one.

Bare Wires - Cheap Perfume

Forget about bobby

I sorta wanna say they sound like a T. Rex meets Iggy Pop. When I first heard the title track awhile back I was mildly impressed and never really thought more of it. We've listened to Bare Wires before and thought they were decent. But when the record came into the store and I got to listen to it on the store speakers I was shocked. It's fantastic. Mixing modern garage guitar with proto-punk styles creates a wonderful collection of songs that both manages to grab your attention and make perfect backdrop music to parties. They're not stepping on new ground but I'm still willing to bet that this will make a few "things you should listen to" lists.

Every so often here at Repo we like to pick one record that we can all agree on as being the one thing we can't stop listening to. The one we pick today is.....

Sex Church - Growing Over

Sex Church's "Growing over" is more space rock less punk rock, sorta sounds like if Wooden Shjips started a punk band. The driving guitar and bass rhythm has been split up since their last album "Six Songs"(an album that is still on a some-what heavy rotation for myself) and now the job of rhythm is solely on the bass, which is perfect, making a more compelling, diverse sound. If you love the bass sound of Les Rallizes Dénudés then this is right up your alley. Before guitar leads were less prominent and more used for driving the rhythm but it now has much stronger hooks. Now there are lead hooks abound and it never feels indulgent but necessary, they get stuck in your head all too easily. Tracks like "Put Away" and "Growing Over" get pretty epic, showcasing their ability to do post-rock compositions while managing to stay away from that label. All in all this is a slightly catchy, heavy, at times spacey and fully enveloping album. You'll put it on and get lost in it.

We still have one copy left of their first album too. Just say'n.

He started early, he stayed late, did a couple of hours of straight signing and took time out for anyone that wanted to ask him questions. Also dude was super nice. Staff Pick of the Week and some extra info on the Rollins event

Every so often here at Repo we like to pick one record that we can all agree on as being the one thing we can't stop listening to. The one we pick today is.....

Dum Dum Girls - Only in Dreams
(Sub pop)

We loved Dum Dum Girls first full length I Will Be and the follow up EP He Gets Me High was one of our staff picks a bit back. So it would have been a safe assumption that we were looking forward to this one but you would have been wrong. Too many times the sophomore release from promising bands are lack luster at best and leads to lack of interest from the general public. We feared this like finding out your dog has cancer, so we distance ourselves from it so it wouldn't hurt so bad when the dog dies. But we were TOTALLY WRONG! This record is like everything we loved about Dum Dum Girls made better. The vocals are brought a little bit more up front, though they're still washed out just enough to sound like the Dum Dum Girls. The singing in general has improved vastly. Tracks like "coming Down" and "In My Head" showcase some real talent vocally. They've also lost some of the garage rock spit for a more vulnerable feeling album, lots of songs about feeling lonely and loss. This adds some needed complexity to the Dum Dum appearance and it fits right in with their sound. And their willingness to clock a song past the five minute mark is nice without felling drawn out for no reason. Slightly slower tempo makes certain songs feel very dreamy, and that combined with lyrics about boys sorta makes you feel like you're a teenager again.

I would punch someone in the face just to be the guy that takes Dee Dee's jacket when she comes into a nice restaurant.

Henry Rollins is coming to Repo!

That's right. The man responsible for some of the great moments in punk rock is hanging out a Repo. Henry Rollins is coming to support his new book "Occupants" which is a collection of photographs he's taken in his travels from 2003-2010 and new writings. He'll be here signing and discussing his book. We're all pretty pumped to have him here and hope you all can come out and have some fun.

Few pictures exist that don't have him screaming or looking pissed.

What's new with us? well, first off we have some bitter sweet news. Long time employee and dancer to the stars, Crystal, has sadly left us to pursue fame and fortune in NYC.

"Yeah, we got her!"

"Lets hang out with Crystal now that she's in the big apple"

"Yeah! CRYSTAL!"

So that means that those days of walking into the store and seeing her drawing a Heavy Metal Wizard are over, instead you'll be seeing more of this dude....

Wooden Shjips - West
(Thrill Jockey)

We've always loved Wooden Shjips. Everything they've done has been great and West is no exception. Starts off with Black Smoke Rise which a pounding space rocker that never manages to wear itself thin. Later on comes the track Home which has a 70's hard rock riff with backing organs and slightly tripped out vocals and every bit of it is hypnotizing. Then around the three minute mark it snaps you back with a solo. The whole album has that great relationship, you get really into whatever rhythm they set out early on and then when they change it up it's only to get crazy. You could argue that's just what Stoner Rock is and you'd be right but Wooden Shjips has always done it better than most and, with West, they've proven that again.

Every week we here at Repo like to pick one record that we can all agree on as being the one thing we can't stop listening to. This week's pick is.....

Black Lips - Arabia Mountian
(Vice)

The Black lips have been outta the public eye for awhile now and when they were, it wasn't pretty. From the spat with wavves front man Nathan Williams to whatever that thing was in India, it was lame press. And to top it all off they gave us 200 Million Thousand which was disappointing at best. But we've held out for The Black Lips, we knew they had the chops to pull off another Let it Bloom or Good bad, Not Evil. We were right. Arabia Mountain is an amazing album. Showcasing their established talents of catchy garage rock writing combining with the things they've been picking up through the years. Every song feels sharper and more thought out. The unnecessary production and stagnate writing style that plagued 200 million is done away with and it makes every instrument seem that much more important. That isn't to simply say they've totally disowned that album. Rather they took some of the ideas of 200 Million and made them better. The best example of this their ending track"You Keep On Running". A song that has a drug haze all around it but instead of going over the edge they keep it in check and create a haunting mantra to finish off this truly awesome album. Overall Arabia Mountain is catchy, well written and reaffirms the fact that a bunch a scummy kids can make a great record.

Human Eye - They Came From The Sky
(Sacred Bones)

Terrorizing, howling and impossible to listen to only once Human Eyes gives us They Came From The Sky. Human Eye hails from Detroit and loves to make an impression. From their odd home brewed cover art to their must see live performances (including amazing home-made costumes) they really want you to pay attention. The vocals have that a Eddie and the hot rods going crazy type swagger. While the guitars range from pounding garage riffs to spacious psychedelic and then brief moments of noise. It's a crazy record but if you love Garage and want to see what direction it's going in then you haveto pick this up.

This is not from their new album but I couldn't find anything better.

Every week we here at Repo like to pick one record that we can all agree on as being the one thing we can't stop listening to. This week's pick is.....

High Tension Wires - Welcome New Machine
(Dirtnap)

High Tension Wires is Mike Wiebe (riverboat Gamblers), Mark Ryan (Marked Men, Mind Spiders), Chris Puliman (The Reds), Daniel Fried and Greg Rutherford (mostly if not all from Texas). So some pretty good names and they put out a pretty great album. This record has huge pop punk hooks with a nice harsh edge. Vocals sound like they're playing out of a crappy PA system and it's a nice texture to the songs. And of course the pounding rhythms the crux of this record. We loved Mark Ryans other project Mind Spiders for similar reasons though MS sounded more thought out whereas this is more visceral record. In the midst of what seems like some of the snoozers on this album HTW will throw in a chorus that makes you wanna pound your fist. And that's the real skill of these talented guys : making some noise that makes you wanna headbang. I wish more bands had this power.

Six years since their last album (the blistering and crazy Gamelan Into the Mink Supernatural) and the New York trio are back with II. Heavily intelligent, heavily complex and simply heavy. Well thought out structure and full shifting rhythms that keep you interested in what's coming next . The songs will seem bound for disaster, hopeless in its chaos, then an abrupt change in gears and into a new pounding rhythm that seems so controlled and driving and makes the chaos seem so intentional like a tease.

The Outsiders - CQ
(Jackpot Records)

C.Q. (pronounced "Seek You") was originally released in 1968 and was the last full length to come from heavily influential Outsiders. These rowdy teenagers from Amsterdam were part of the thriving 'Nederbeat' scene with the band taking their cues from British and American garage acts of the day (including singing entirely in English). 'CQ' spans R&B, spacey experimental numbers, folk rock and a revved-up kind of punk that pre-dates the angular moodiness of what would become the no wave/post punk sound a decade later.

Dum Dum Girls - He Gets Me High
(Sub Pop)

Dum Dum Girls know what they're doing, lets just get that outta the way. They know that we know all of their influences and their aspirations of who they wish they were. But they don't care and are so honest in letting us know who they love that it's the reason why we love them. I could break down this EP by each song but I won't. This is a great cluster of songs and gets you excited for what ever they decide to do next. I also feel I should say that I wish Dum Dum Girls would become a cover band because every cover they do is so cool to listen to.

That last one isn't on the EP but showcases my point.

Asteroid #4 - Hail to the Clear Figurines
(Keep Music Evil)

Philly's Own Asteroid #4 comes at us with their sixth full length Hail to the Clear Figurines. We've loved all of their past work and this one is no exception. This record has some shoegaze elements coming across mixed with 60's psychedelic. Every song sounds like it's dipped in warm honey making for a more dreamy Asteroid album then previous ones. The vocals are sorta washed out which allows them to weave around the spacious guitars sounds. Certain parts of the album sound country influenced and makes me think of of the Fresh and Only's play it strange, an album I loved because of that sound, though Asteroid has been moving that way for awhile now. A great album by a great band.

Mogwai - Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will
(Sub Pop)

Just to start off I've gotta say what a great title this album has, I mean honestly, congratulations all around.
The Scottish five piece is back after 08's The Hawk is Howling with the slightly toned down and more accessible Hardcore will never Die, But You Will . I think it's important to say that along with the great title the band is also giving away ear plugs with the album. I point this out only to showcase the fact that Mogwai has a great sense of humor, an important departure from their more brooding peers. This mentality might help explain why lately their sound is not always as cinematic as Godspeed or dramatic as Sigur Ros. Bands that people tend to want to compare them to but shouldn't. They simply want to have have fun, rock out and craft interesting songs. And they did. This is a well crafted, if not a little simpler, Mogwai album. It's fun, it gets you excited and it doesn't disappoint.

Disappears - Guider
(Kranky)

This album sounds like it's got a high gloss enamel over it and I mean that as a good thing. The reverb is dripping off of every song, like the sound is trying to pass through this enamel and explode. It's got a fogginess to it and yet, at the same time sounds intentional and smooth. They takes the raw sound of their punk roots and tone down the abrasiveness while keeping the energy up. The main bite of Disappers though is the pounding rhythms. The rhythms aren't catchy per se, but infect you none the less with how driven they feel. Disappears is a kraut rock charged melody machine that takes itself pretty seriously, and it's so nice.

Smith Westerns - Dye it Blonde
(Fat Possum)

Last year the self titled debut from Chicago's Smith westerns manged to slip by many despite positive reviews (even getting an honorable mention from Pitchfork in their best of the year list). Not to let the same mistake happen again SW return and are ready to take over our stereos. The first album had a feeling that they where running trough it, in a good way, kinda like kids running through a field instead of stopping to enjoy the scenery. Compared to their first album "Dye it Blonde" is more pastoral, it's willing to really explore and expand on an idea. So they've come back with their flashy guitars and catchy rhythms and you know what? It's great. The production value is an improvement on this album. The spacey/Psych guitars in "All Die Young" make a huge impressions on the song, having a three minute song feel like it continues to infinity. Jumpy, poppy leads take over most of the album though, making you wish you had more than ten toes to tap.

It should also be said that this was a tough week to pick from. Honorable mentions : Electric Wizard, Cage the Elephant.

The Soft Moon - The Soft Moon
(Captured Tracks)

Louis Vasquez, A.K.A. The Soft Moon, brings us music that is Moody, atmospheric and full of wonderful post punk rhythms. This is music that sounds amazing and makes you really take each song apart bit by bit. SM joins Joy division style bass with dark pop guitars making for really capturing moments. The percussion and production are the main contemporary components sort of reminding you of current shoegaze music. The vocals are almost completely lost but in a good way, they're used much more as a texture than something that pops in front of the music. If you looked for them you'd find them, but it seems like that was never the point. Each song begs for comparison to new and old alike but in the end it still feels like an album that is truly it's own.

Cee Lo Green - Lady Killer

It's been awhile coming, but finally we've decided to make this our pick of the week. The only reason we've been hesitant to do so is because everyone has already said everything about this album. We always want to keep our picks little gems that people might like to discover, not albums that everyone's already in love with. But we can't hold our collective tongues any longer. This Album is SO good. Statements about the production value or catchy tunes are moot because once you listen to "F**k You" it's over. Your hooked. All you want after that is more and more after that. I'm not much of a dancer( but, from time to time, I do like cut a rug) and this is an album that when I play it my hands start clapping and my hips start shaking. Everyone needs an occasion to dance and putting on this album is occasion enough.

I'm dancing right now. Right. Now.

The Fresh and Onlys - Play it Strange
(In The Red)

A little bit country a little bit rock'n'roll. These songs are toe tapping garage rock goodness. It's all the western bits in the song that really help this album stand out. They makes you feel like you're watching the best part of some sort of strange western movie set in New York City. Bringing to mind at the same time The Man With No Name and Radio Birdman TFAO's manage to cover a wide array of music genres with out ever feeling like they're trying.

Blues Creation - Demon & Eleven Children
(Bamboo)

What ever your opinions of their later works under Creation it's hard to deny that Blues Creation's "Demon & Eleven Children" is an amazing display of early heavy metal brilliance. Originally released in 1971 and hailed as one some of the best early psychedelic rock. There are times when listening to this you will feel like there are rocks pouring out of your speakers. Every song is filled with those bluesy riffs that made heavy metal so great. The parts where they jam out and get freaky are really what this album is all about, just letting go and having the music seep into your brain. And I don't know what it is about Japanese dudes singing in English about Mississippi like it's so great but, it's fantastic.

somewhere in the six minute area I just feel high.

Black Ryder - Buy the Ticket, Take the Ride
(Mexican Summer)

Sometimes dreamy, sometimes shoe gaze-y Black Ryder creates songs that you can really get lost in. While writing this I stopped to give one song my undivided attention for a moment and ended up listening for another three tracks without being aware that anytime had passed. Part of this is due to the fact that every once in awhile you'll hear something that sounds familiar. What your hearing is Black Ryder paying homage to those that came before and inspired them. At times you'll hear Brian Jonestown Massacre, Oasis, Smog and others. And honestly, it's great.

Are you even aware that seven minutes just passed? In the amount of time it took to listen to this song 5,250,000 gallons of water fell over Niagara Falls.

Leona Anderson - Music to Suffer By
(Trunk Records)

Leona Anderson recorded this little diddy in 1958 with a full backing orchestra and well, "Music to Suffer By" is honestly bad. period. There's something to be said about things that are awesomely bad. From Plan 9 to Street fighter there's something amazingly alluring and too honestly comical about these works. And so "Music To Suffer By" would fit in nicely along any bad B-Horror Movie. If you could round up every little thing that makes music horrid and you put them together you would have this. From consistently off key singing to eerie, spacey and uninteresting musical composition this album, truly, has it all. But still, there is a charm here. Charm and something else that's gonna make you giggle with your friends.

Off The Wall
(Past & Present)

An amazing collection of mid to late 60 garage rock/punk that was originally released in the 80's. If you're a fan of the Seeds, Paul Revere and the raiders or any of the other late 60's garage rock masters this is something to check out. Filled with Nuggets-esque samples of small time acts such as the E-T Types and The Opposite Six the whole album has a good variety in the selection. The songs selected make the whole album Garage Rock! but never manage to become boring or sounding like everyone is copying each other. This is partly because the songs range from The Grains of Sand's almost Folk-ish "She needs me"to the Drones spacey "I'm Down Today". It never really feels repetitive. So good, so good.

Also it's only limited to 500 copies so get'em while they're still around!

The Intelligence - Males
(In the Red)

Lars Finberg comes back after Fake Surfers, which we loved, with Males. Rock'n and filled with nice little hooks but still packed with all those amazing odd/off kilter/dissonant/creepy moments that it can't be helped but to call it an Intelligence album. Lars usually records solo but he decided to have his whole touring band record with him this time. Compared to the sometimes sparse sounding Fake Surfers this new album comes across fuller and full of energy.

This isn't from the album (no one wants to post new Intelligence videos, or something) but it's a great song none the less.

Ash Helio

Hey guys, Ash Helio here, ready to drop some baby knowledge on your grow'd up dairy airs! So from what I've gathered in my four and a half months on this here earth, people like themes. So lets piece together a themed write-up for you all. Seeing that sweet picture of me just chillin' I'm sure you can not help but think about the circle of life. Below are some new nicenesses and old nicenesses, and no mentionings of Elton John songs.

First up I've got to express my love for old school hip hop. It appears that I, Ash Helio, may very well be B-FAB ("Born From a Boombox" to all you foolish enough not to have rocked "Step Up 3-D" as of yet). After diggin' on the sweetness of "Step Up 3-D" I needed to enjoy an old school dance party myself, and nothing was satisfying quite like 1986's "Mantronix - The Album" from Sleeping Bag Records (who knew Arthur Russell was responsible for getting "Needle to the Groove" out there?). Great stuff to pop and lock it to. Very excellent and chill beats. At about 35 minutes, though, you are going to need some more beats to keep that party going. I've been feeling the album "No Mas" by Javelin a lot lately, and since it jams in a totally chill way as well, I'd say it is pretty perfect to keep on dancing. Their 8-bit sounding keys match nicely with the old school sound of Mantronix, and at one point they tell you they'd like to see you "monkey foot"...and who can resist that request? Really fun, breezy dance music that has a beautiful low-tech sound to it.

We should really keep on dancing when it comes down to it. So I think it is time to talk about some Sublime Frequencies amazing-ness. Sometimes pops is like "Should we save money for you to go to college, or should we make sure to buy every Sublime Frequencies record that comes out?" and I'm all like "Who even knows if colleges will exist in 18 years? Sweet jams, though, they're eternal!". So pops buys the newest CD and the record of a CD he already owns by Omar Souleyman. Good thinking! That dude jams as hard as his moustache and sunglasses do! His beats are crazy, and he looks so chill rockin' those beats. Boy am I glad that pops took me to see Omar up in Central Park for my first concert! I'm gonna have to find me a really rich Syrian bride one day so that I can get this dude to MC my wedding and we will party at breakneck speed. Now for the old side of this coin, the Sublime Frequencies options are pretty stacked. The one I've been diggin' hardest of late is another Omar: Omar Khorshid and the record "Guitar El Chark". The record is OOP, but I'm sure SF will put out a CD of it in the near future, and you totally need to pick that up. It's like middle-eastern surf rock or something. Crazy instrumental guitar/keyboard jams that will make your head spin. You'll be quietly rockin' out, and your roommate will walk into the room all "Holy jebus! Is Linda Blair listening to the sweetest tunes in my living room?!". Cuz, you see, your head will be spinning. Like in the Exorcist.

Oh man, and I almost forgot: thinking about my first concert reminds me to let you all know that the greatest concert is getting a DVD release on 9/7! I will now be able to watch "77 Boa Drum"! Pops tells me it was pretty amazing, and I believe it! Boredoms + 77 Drum Sets + 7 Neck Guitar + Beautiful Summer Sunset = infinity. There really is no way to add up all those excellences using the meager number system we have available to us.

Now, I am a baby, so all this excitement is getting me a bit too riled up. I think it is about time I try to chill a little with the help of my kraut friends. Lets throw on "Harmonia Live '74", "Harmonia w/ Brian Eno - Tracks & Traces", or "Faust - So Far" and get totally chilled out. Such niceness here. All the Harmonia mentioned will still the most restless of baby souls, and the title track of "So Far" lets worries melt away, and naptime comes quite easily. These are the sounds of the world I am excited to have entered! And if I start to wake a bit, all of these are jams I can still get my dance on to! Once I wake up, I might still be in the mood for some nice repetition...something similar to these recordings that keeps the mind clear. I'm going to want something that is more raucous, though. I've had my nap, see! So it's time to throw on any of the Wooden Shjips or Moon Duo records. Personally I am partial to the Moon Duo EP "Killing Time"...nice repetitive riffs, and an ending song purdy enough to sound like Yo La Tengo. But mostly I'm rockin! From "Wooden Shjips" I'd have to go with "Volume 1", the first collection of singles and such. The songs sound are droney, feedback drenched rockers. Single riffs that go on forever. These dudes are totally reliable, too. I've been diggin' all their records a good bit!

Lastly lets move on to the album "Rhizomes" by Effi Briest. This is some excellence! A little tougher to describe I would say...similar in spirit to the Raincoats, but not a carbon copy at all. There are some great rhythms going on here, some really nice repeated interlocking guitar lines, all making you totally excited about folks making music. And the cover art is awesome to this record. For an older item to pair up with it, lets just make sure anyone who didn't have the first Raincoats record due to its OOPness over the last few years has made sure to snatch up the nice new issue of it. Impossible not to love! Or maybe "Cut" by the Slits...I definitely feel that vibe from Effi Briest as well.

Wavves - King of the Beach

I think it's needless to say that Nathan Williams needed a win after the disasters (fist fights, lost band members and drugged out shows) that followed him after the release of his second album. Well... here's that win. "King of the Beach" feels like it was made by some bored, fresh out of high school pot head and so do all his other records, but that's part of why we like Wavves. It reminds you of all those sophomore-ish emotions that you love to recall, thinking about those days you had nothing better to do but get high and think about girls, all while rocking your head. That being said "King of the Beach" is not simply another installment of Wavves brand bored fuzz punk, it's a beast all it's own. Most notably the production is way, way better. It still sounds low-fi enough to make you feel the scuzz but the new layers of sound and use of an actual backing band makes you wanna listen to everything that's going on in each song. The lyrics are still straight out of someone's depressing dairy but even there you can hear the start of something different. If you listen to the title track's lyrics they seem fairly angry for Wavves but in a "I'll persevere over all you a**holes" sort of way. And you know what, he sorta did.

Also I feel it should be mentioned that the album cover is kinda great, a bling sport'n cat with a joint. Just wonderful.

Menomena - Mines

So it's four years after "Friend and Foe" and it really shows. The whole album has a feel similar to FAF but with a more complete and confident writing style. Like with all their records this is really a headphones kinda album, so many little details make these songs what they are and it pays to give them their full attention. Some songs swell and become these behemoths while others manage to haunt you and make you keep re-listening to them. It's sorta like a good movie, you keep watching it over and over and then you start picking up these little details you didn't notice before. You think to yourself "Oh, I never noticed that piano in the back, cool". Then you start enjoying the music for so many other reasons and it's great.

Name dropping : They sound like Menomena, best way to put it.

I must have changed which song to put up about five times. It has became really hard to pick, I'm listening to the album as I type so I keep changing it to the song I'm listening to.

Endless Boogie - Full Head House
(No Quarter)

This is the kinda album you wanna put on at a relaxed party. You've got a few friends over, someone has brought a case of beer and you've got some whiskey in the cabinet. Some people are sitting down talking and some others are messing around in the back. All around a good time without too much effort to do so. Then you put on "Full Head House" and it fills the air. It becomes the back round sound to games going on, it fills in those little gaps in between conversations and it feels like you put the right album on.

No nonsense rock, plain and simple. These guys sound like some forgotten 70's blues rock band that decided to kick it up a notch.

News spread fast on may 16th that Ronnie James Dio had passed away. We here at Repo Records would like to say farwell to the metal hero/iconic hand gesture inventor. Considered by many to be one of the best voices in the genre, he sang about tigers and dragons and made some of the most iconic metal around. The holy Diver has taken his last dive... in a manner of speaking.

The Hold Steady, Stay Positive. Dudes have been awesome pretty much since jump and yet missing their shows always seems like a good idea at first ($28 at the Electric Factory?). This jawn makes me feel consistently stupid for doing so. Seriously, Craig Finn should get shot outside Hot 97 for spitting lyrics like these. They've always been conspicuously aware of their place in the rock matrix, making sure to give props to their forebears and influences, but on this album they've made steps toward diversification by incorporating punk rock into their world view. By repping HC dudes like Husker Du and 7 Seconds they're trying to move beyond all that "world's greatest bar-band" half-praise and demonstrate their full commitment to rocking people's faces off. In Finn's almost obsessive referencing of the past he's like a Midwestern Nas, minus the whole imaginary-drug-kingpin thing but with better beats. And solos! Sweet, sweet guitar solos arching heavenward to ball-tap Jesus. I don't think I'll ever get tired of listening to this. And hopefully they'll start a heavy "in '88 you was gettin' chased in your building" beef with with like Vampire Weekend or something.

EROC, EROC 1-4. Though not the harshest Krautrock releases, these are probably the strangest in terms of stylistic variety. Covers the distance between "Peking O" freakout stuff and the more deliberate, heavy keyboard Michael Rother post-NEU! stuff. All four of these albums rule so hard. They also have funny liner note pictures. And sometimes sound like a German Swell Maps. Really silly, unexpected and forehead-smacking. Accordion jams, reverb experiments, glass-breaking noises, uncomfortable orgasm noises, children singing... all awesome! The fourth album is the best album I got in all of 2008, especially the unholy quartet of songs coming in the middle of its second half; "Detleft Ist Weg", "Die Kinder Zeihen Fort", "Der Prophet" and "Sonntagsfahrt" gracefully transition from dorky proto-hip-hop to dorky big drum "Owner of a Lonely Heart"-kinda thing to the undisputed champion of minimalist funk to a tune perfect for a jaunty ride on the sun, respectively. Breathless! Seriously, "Der Prophet" is so smooth it's illegal. I heard some jerk on the train say that he had "the most diverse musical taste ever... from Carrie Underwood to Atreyu". These EROC albums were probably made to hospitalize that kid. Buy them!

Endless Boogie, Focus Level. Non-stop post-ZZ Top-rock. These guys are pretty old, which is cool, and rock on each riff for a really long time. Like Circle's extension of Priest/Motorhead biker-rock on Sunrise, dusty Billy Gibbons-isms are expanded to incredible lengths and effect. Probably the only record whose FFO recommendation lists both Mogwai and George Thorogood. But they're freaking zillions times better than each. Best part: "Gimme the Awesome". Song circles around amiably but with definite purpose until bursting out with great volume. One of the best builds since Electric Wizard's "Funeralopolis", which is totally crazy because that song is the greatest.

Kreator, Pleasure to Kill. This didn't get reissued this year or anything but I didn't get it until around October or so so I'll count it anyway. It basically puts together most of the coolest aspects of thrash and early black metal, so you can have the imprecise, wind-tunnel blastbeats and unearthly vocals of the black stuff but with the low end of thrash! Like if you could hear the bass on a Bathory record! Kreator rocks super hard. Playing "Under Pressure", "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" and the title cut from this album at the same time is a very worthwhile experience.

Om Shanti Om. Probably the funniest and funnest movie I've seen in the last seven months. If you don't know your Prem Chopra from your Johnny Lever most of the jokes won't really seem very funny but the film has such a chillin' attitude that it's easy to overlook the barrage of in-jokes and cameos. Plus, Shah Rukh Khan, the king of '90s Indian cinema, is back in action and ready to rock to a ridiculous extreme in this movie. The dude is ripped like Hulk Hogan's shirt. It's insane. Aaaaaand, the film features an incredible song called "Dard-E Disco", meaning "the pain of disco". Or maybe "the disco of pain". Either way it's the best. Somewhat like a slicker Lindstrom.

Steinski, What Does It All Mean? 1983-2006. Given that this is predominantly a samples and scratching record it could follow that his jams succeed or fail solely on than the sum of their parts. And since he's dropping in samples of super-sweet stuff like Rufus Thomas, Gilbert Gottfried, "Stop in the Name of Love" and, best of all, "Break Dance Electric Boogie" it's easy to get down with this jawn from a parts-to-whole standpoint. Yet when we engage this comp more holistically it totally holds up, qualitatively speaking. Like the best modern mash-up stuff, shit's got a really smooth internal flow, avoiding the feeling that he's just artlessly clumping samples, no matter how neat, into a piecemeal ball. I told my dad about this record and he said, "Oh, so it's like that Girl Talk guy?" Go my dad! The stuff on the first disc that Steinski rocked without Double D has a couple embarrassing moments, most notably a track with Chuck D that sounds like the trailer music for a late '90s rave movie. But the first tracks are so sweet that who cares?

"Windy Weber, known for being half of the ambient drone duo WINDY & CARL, has recorded a solo album. It is quite different from what you may be thinking it has none of the soothing characteristics you may be expecting & instead is full of heavy & brooding music. It’s comprised of two tracks Sirens, coming in at 24 minutes, is instrumental & is filled with the sound of guitars crying, rising & falling like waves crashing on the rocks. Sirens is ominous, and haunting. It is not music to sleep to, but instead could make you tense & anxious. The second track is Destroyed. It is 32 minutes long, and comprised of 3 suites. The first being layers of vocals, woven together to make a chorus of breathing & breathlessness, layers to make you feel as if you may be drowning in the sea..whether that sea be the ocean, or the sea of life, the day to day world in which you must deal. The second suite becomes noisy, agitated, rumbling & distorted guitars, bass & feedback, and makes you sit on the edge of your seat wondering what is about to happen. The third suite takes you to the end of the album with it’s subsonic frequencies & strange unrecognizible sounds. This is not music for the faint of heart ."

"This is the second in Honest Jon's series of albums exploring the earliest 78s held in the EMI Hayes Archive. In the mid-1920s, The Gramophone Company -- soon before it became EMI -- employed two or three Europeans to criss-cross Iraq. They logged regional demographics, assessed the German competition, and checked out the scores of record shops and hundreds of musical venues. In Kerbala, its man fearfully disguised himself as an Arab. This was the groundwork for three sessions, conducted in Baghdad in the second half of the decade, which produced nearly 1,000 recordings. Business was good -- the first group of records, though deemed aesthetically unsuccessful by the Company, immediately produced 12,000 sales to just two outlets in the city. Drawing on the full range of these Baghdad recordings, it is a wondrous, deeply poignant glimpse of social living since obliterated, in which ethnicities, faiths and traditions appear woven richly and meltingly together, however precariously. There is dance music featuring Arab folk singers from the countryside, backed by professional Jewish musicians in Iraqi styles popularly termed "Egyptian," and perfected in nightclubs where the first duty of the secular women singers on this album was prostitution. Also including some Arabic word-play, in a nod to the musical form of the Arabic mawwal, a Hebrew hymn is kick-started with a cry of "Allah!," most likely from one of the Jewish performers. There are pieces from Bahrain and Kuwait; sometimes mixed together in one performance -- the different dialects are far-flung. There are beautiful, high and lonesome Kurdish violin improvisations; and some unaccompanied circular breathing on a zourna so unearthly it seems to cross late Coltrane with Sun Ra. All the songs are characterized by searing emotion and crises of feeling, many by erotic urgency. As with the other titles in the series, the recordings have been startlingly restored at Abbey Road; and they are presented with full translations, rare photographs (in this case, several performers), and notes -- including an extensive interview with a citizen of Baghdad throughout this period, who knew many of the musicians here personally."

TOWNES VAN ZANDT: Delta Momma Blues & Flying Shoes

"This is another strong collection from Townes Van Zandt, and not a dud in the bunch. The melodies here are strong, the lyrics full of Van Zandt's razor-sharp insight, and the production is sparse and to the point, bringing to mind the inconspicuous polish of High and Low and In Between. The feel here is a balance between folk and country, with Van Zandt's voice and guitar up front, letting the songs speak for themselves. The tunes are full of heartbreak and hopelessness, making it a great album to put on during, or right after, the breakup of an affair."
